| With Milton Babbitt - 1977 | |||||

This photogrpah was taken in 1977 at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA in their third of three Buchla Studios, B-305. At the time, this studio housed the older three panel Buchla 100 system. And once again, my legs are crossed (third time in three pictures I've noticed). For the life of me, I do not remember a photographer in the room during this brief half-hour session I was fortunate to have arranged with Babbitt during his short visit to the school. Outlaid on the table before us is the visual score to my electronic piece Eclipse which we were referencing and Babbit was expounded on while it was being played. He found my realization of the visual score (which was done before the piece was begun) to be 'interesting'. He liked the work. No comment regarding my attire, outside of the fact that it was 1977 and tight jeans were 'in'. Accompanying Milton on this visit was comrade and fellow Columbia University legend, composer Vladimir Ussachevsky, which made for quite a memorable week indeed. An interesting personality trait emerged on several occations during Ussachevsky's lecture. From time to time, he would remove a bit of splicing tape from the role, stick it in his mouth and begin chewing on it as if it were a piece of gum. This activity has also been verified by Pril Smiley, who worked with Vlad for many years while both resident at Columbia. Other than that, I was surprised at his light-hearted demeanor, which was so contrary to what I was expecting based on the seriousness of his portraits. |
