AUDIO INTERVIEW: BOWLING GREEN UNIVERSITY ~ ELECTROLUX

I was recently asked to conduct an audio interview , an 'audio postcard' as they call it for the graduate music composition students of Bowling Green Uhiversity. I thought possibly (maybe????) some of you may find this of interest.

Mathew MacCabe asked his students to pose a series of questions in regard to the process and compositional conventions of Electrolux. Five of these questions were presented to me and my replies were recorded and in turn presented to the analysis class. The questions were:

1) Is there a programmatic element to "Electrolux" that guided the structure of the piece? Do the fadeouts delineate the larger sections of the piece, or are the silences "part of the music"?

2. If you could, please discuss the process by which you decided how to place your sounds in the mix. What are the guiding principles behind your levels, panning, intensity of sound, etc?

3. Did you have a specific feeling which brought you back to music composition after a 22-year hiatus? If so, do these ideas/passions come through in "Electrolux"?

4. How much does the listener factor into your creative process?

5. How do you feel about the future of electroacoustic music in the context of "New" Music and otherwise?

You will hear some bad edits and levels changes here that resulted in my own editing of the information. Please bare with these.
