This was taken at the California Institute of the Arts in 1977. (I'm the guy under the arrow)

I consider myself fortunate to have seen Cage in lecture on a few occations. My failing memory cannot be certain if it happened at this particular one, but at one of them I remember him speaking through a microphone as well. There were four Revox's next to him. He launched into his lecture, and about 5 minutes into it he stopped, rewound the first deck which was recording all this, and began to play it aloud from the beginning as he then went back to the mic and continued the lecture over that playback. He did this three other times during the recital with the remaining decks, each time rewiinding all of them back to the heads until there were 10 generations of the lecture playing at once while he spoke.

While it certainly did not make for easy understanding of the information being presented, it was a fascinating example of the possiblities of kinetic art.

Also pictured here: directly infront of me, leaning on his hands is the late Nick England, then Dean of the school of music. In the foregorund, back to camera with ponytail, composer Chas Smith. To the left of Chas is Michael Fink, both of which are now signed to the Cold Blue label and producing some incredible music.
